Fish Oil & Flaxseed Oil for Dry Eyes

Chronic dry eyes or dry eye syndrome is a condition characterised by the lack of enough lubrication in the eyes. It may manifest through itch, burning sensation, dryness, redness, and pain in the eyes, among many other symptoms. Dry eyes are caused mainly by the failure of the involved glands to produce the components needed for a normal tear film that keeps the eyes sufficiently lubricated. There are also a lot of factors, such as aging and health conditions, that increase the risk of having dry eyes.

Dry eyes can be uncomfortable and distressing. Thankfully, there are many options and practices for managing and preventing dry eyes. Nutritional supplements are one of the treatment plans doctors recommend, as studies have shown that omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil and flaxseed oil contribute to decreasing and preventing dry eye syndrome.

OMEGA-3 for Eye Health

Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) are the essential fatty acids (EFA) we generally call Omega-3. Our bodies cannot naturally produce EFAs but they are easily sourced from the food we eat. Omega-3 is essential in maintaining optimal health, helping regulate the biological functions of the different systems in the body.

EPA and DHA play an important role in eye health. Studies have shown that they may help reduce the risk of eye conditions, particularly dry eyes, macular degeneration, glaucoma, and cataracts. Flaxseed Oil

Flaxseed oil contains high amounts of ALA that our bodies convert to EPA and DHA during digestion, making it an ideal solution for dry eye syndrome. It may come in capsule or liquid form, or you may simply include ground flax seeds to your food and drinks. It’s generally less expensive than fish oil and is the preferred choice by vegetarians, people who get digestive upset with fish oil, and those who do not like the fishy aftertaste of fish oil supplements.

Fish Oil

Fish oil naturally contains EPA and DHA our bodies can immediately use for essential functions, including vision. Omega-3 are obtained directly from fish such as salmon and tuna, or fish oil supplements in capsule or liquid form. It is recommended to have 2-3 servings of fish every week to obtain sufficient DHA. As for fish oil supplements, consult your physician for recommended dosage.
